THE ISLAND AND THE SEA IN BETWEEN

Mudflat hiking
on Pellworm.

Where there was water just a moment ago, a world of its own opens up. A guided mudflat hike is one of those outings that show you Pellworm from a different side.

NATURE ALL AROUND THE ISLAND

See the sea.
Understand more.

Pellworm lies within the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tides change the landscape around the island: the water covers the mudflats and then releases them again. A guided walk helps you get to know this habitat and its inhabitants more closely.

Keeping an eye on the tides is worthwhile during your holiday even if you stay on the dyke. The view changes, and with it the opportunities for swimming or watching wildlife.

YOUR OUTING SHOULD SUIT YOU

Which mudflat hike
is the right one?

For a first taste.

If it’s your first time on the mudflats, look for a shorter guided walk with time to discover things and ask questions. Check the walking distance, ground and duration in advance.

Think about how much you want to take on that day. After your journey or the ferry crossing, a quiet evening on the island may suit you better than a pre-booked excursion.

Out with children.

An event for families should suit your children’s ages. Ask about a suitable tour and what will be expected along the way. The name of an event alone doesn’t tell you much about how demanding it is.

For a longer tour.

If you’re planning an extended hike, discuss fitness, equipment and the time needed with the provider. Keep the rest of the day free and plan in the journey back to the apartment.

ANTICIPATION WITH A LITTLE PREPARATION

How to plan
your day on the mudflats.

Date and meeting point.

Check the current programme for your travel dates and register with the provider. Also ask how you’ll hear about any changes or a cancellation due to the weather.

Clothing and footwear.

Ask the mudflat guide what to bring for your particular tour. Depending on the weather, pack extra clothes for afterwards and something to drink. Check the requirements for children separately.

Onto the mudflats with local knowledge.

Tidal creeks, patches of soft mud, the weather and the incoming tide all call for local knowledge. A tide table on its own is not a route plan. Join a guided mudflat hike and follow the guidance on site.

Say hello
When can I go on a mudflat hike on Pellworm?

Start times depend on the local tides and on what the mudflat guides are offering. Use the current event dates for your holiday and confirm the meeting point directly when you book.

Can children take part in a mudflat hike?

Choose a guided walk that is expressly suitable and ask about the minimum age, duration and requirements. A short discovery tour and a longer hike across the mudflats make very different demands on children and adults.

What footwear do I need?

That depends on the route, the ground and the time of year. Check what to bring with your mudflat guide. Don’t simply assume you’ll go barefoot or in wellies – go by the information for your particular guided walk.

Will you book the mudflat hike for me?

Your enquiry with us is about the Norderoog holiday apartment. You book guided nature walks and excursions separately with each provider. That way you get the current details on dates, prices and taking part directly.
