THE ISLAND AFTER SUNSET

Dark-sky island
Pellworm.

Look far into the distance by day. Even further by night. On Pellworm, the dark night sky is one of the special reasons to treat yourself to a few days of island time.

DARKNESS AS SOMETHING SPECIAL

Less light.
More sky.

In 2021, Pellworm was recognised as a “Sterneninsel” – a dark-sky island – by what was then the International Dark Sky Association. Behind this lies a conscious approach to artificial lighting and the protection of a naturally dark night.

The low light pollution is a special feature all year round. It makes Pellworm an interesting place for a stargazing holiday – whether you already know your way around the sky or are looking for constellations properly for the first time.

YOUR EVENING UNDER THE STARS

Plan a little.
Then marvel.

The right night.

Few clouds and little bright moonlight make for good viewing. The tourist office particularly recommends spring and autumn. In winter the nights are long; even so, a clear view still depends on the weather.

Leave several evenings open in your holiday plans. That way you can make the most of a clear sky at short notice.

Warm and relaxed.

Pack warm layers, a hat and a blanket. Even in summer, nights on the North Sea can turn cool. A star chart and, if you like, a pair of binoculars are worth packing too.

Work out in daylight how you’ll get there and back. You’ll need a light on the way; at the viewing spot, avoid bright screens you don’t need.

Time for your eyes.

Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark. To begin with, pick out one striking constellation rather than trying to see as much as possible at once.

The tourist information office has material to help you find your way around the sky. It also makes a lovely way to prepare for an evening together with children.

THREE PLACES TO WATCH THE SKY

Where you can
look up.

Hörn bathing spot.

The tourist office lists a Sternenkieker stargazing bench here. Combine getting to know the spot with a walk around the island in daylight.

At the Kaydeich.

There is also a Sternenkieker bench at the Kaydeich adventure playground. Families can discover the place by day for a later visit.

By the fishing pond.

Another Sternenkieker spot is by the fishing pond in the south-west of the island. The official map will help you plan your route.

Spots as listed by the Tourismusservice Pellworm, checked on 17 September 2026. If the weather is poor, perhaps one of our ideas for autumn and winter on Pellworm will suit you.

YOUR HOME BETWEEN TWO STARRY NIGHTS

Back to the
Frisian house.

After your outing, Norderoog awaits with its own kitchen for a hot cup of tea and a living room for winding down in comfort. The holiday apartment has around 52 m² of space for 2 to 4 people.

In the low season it costs €52 per night for two people, plus a one-off final cleaning fee of €80. For three nights that comes to €236 for your stay; the local visitor tax is charged separately on top. You can calculate your exact dates, including any supplements, directly on the prices page.

Say hello
Is Pellworm a dark-sky island only in winter?

The recognition and the protection of the dark night sky apply all year round. In winter the nights are long, but clouds and moonlight also play a part in what you can see. Spring and autumn are good times for a stargazing trip, too.

Do I need a telescope?

To get started, your eyes and a little patience are enough. A star chart helps you find your way around; binoculars, if you bring some, can round off the evening. A telescope or equipment to borrow is not part of the apartment’s listed amenities.

Can I count on a clear starry sky?

A clear night can’t be promised. Keep several evenings free and decide depending on the weather. Plan your trip so that you’ll also enjoy a walk along the dyke, exploring the island and cosy hours in Norderoog.
